Girls' basketball fans who have been making the trek to the various regional and sectional tournaments around the area have been noticing one particular difference.
The Country Insurance Three-Point Showdown, long a pregame postseason stable, is still going on, but in a much revised format. Instead of holding competition on the day of each tournament game, shooters are squaring off against each other on the nights of the regional or sectional finals.
Sixteen area players advanced out of the regional-final round, and will be competing tonight at various Class 1A and 2A sectional sites for the right to take part in the finals on Thursday, Feb. 21 at Redbird Arena in Normal.
In 1A, Polo Regional champion Prophetstown had two of its shooters advance to tonight's finals at the River Ridge Sectional, Cassie Reiley and Heather Strike. Erie's Desirae Lawson will be joining the Lady Prophets' duo in Hanover.
A quartet of Lincoln Trail Conference standouts will be competing at the Oglesby Sectional finals at Illinois Valley Community College -- Wethersfield teammates Sarah Hansen and Anissa Jackson, Galva's Nicole Withrow and Ridgewood's Ashley Collins. All advanced out of the Annawan Regional.
In 2A, tonight's Orion Sectional final between Sherrard and El Paso-Gridley will also see the Tigers' senior guard Carly Adams shooting for state individually, alongside Rockridge's Cheyenne Bowman, Monmouth-Roseville's Jordain Johnson and Mercer County's Michaela Baker; all advanced out of the Rockridge Regional.
And at the Somonauk Sectional, Sterling Newman Regional advancers Chelsea Eads of Morrison, Sam Raab of Fulton and teammates Lauren Claus and Sydney Mericle from regional champion Riverdale will compete, along with Bureau Valley's Nicole Bornsheuer.
