(Davenport, IA) River Music Experience is excited to welcome the Urban Jazz Coalition for a free workshop on February 16. It will be held at noon on the RME Community Stage and is sponsored by the Moline Foundation and the HAVlife Foundation.
The main theme of the workshop will be the dynamics of a professional band. Topics of discussion will include the importance of character and camaraderie of a group, musical backgrounds, what each individual can bring to the table, and financial partnerships. They will also present a sample budget to teach the aspects of income and spending throughout the year.
UJC is one of the hottest new contemporary jazz groups to come onto the scene in some time, and they have created a major buzz on the national festival circuit over the past few years.
The group is composed of seven members; bassist Phil Raney, guitarist Joe Gothard, guitarist Duane Tribune, percussionist Hector Maldonado, saxophonist Richard Randolph, drummer Rico Adams, and Brandon Howard on the keyboard.
They have electrified audiences across North America performing their unique blend of urban jazz at many of the nation's top smooth jazz festivals, including The Seabreeze Jazz Festival, The V98.7 Detroit Smooth Jazz Fest, Jazz Fest West, The Las Vegas City of Lights Jazz and R&B Festival, The Jacksonville Jazz Festival, The Greater Hartford Festival of Jazz, WJZZ Atlanta's Smooth Jazz Under The Stars Series, and at a variety of concert venues around the country.
"Urban Jazz Coalition is the best kept secret in smooth jazz… UJC rocked our festival into an absolute frenzy! With live performance, it's all about the music and the energy on stage, and these fellas came to play" said Michael Schivo of the Las Vegas City of Lights Jazz Festival.
Brian Soergel, award winning smooth jazz columnist for Jazz Time Magazine, described UJC's sound a being flush with rhythmic grooves, funky bass lines, and beautifully written melodies.
On the evening of February 16, the Urban Jazz Coalition will be performing in the Smooth Jazz Valentines Concert featuring Paula Atherton. This will be in the Redstone Room of the River Music Experience at eight o'clock and is presented by the RME and Great Sounds Promotions. Tickets to see the show are $100 per couple, $55 for singles, and $120 for premium couple seating. Along with heavy Hors d'oeuvres, dessert, and free wine tasting for all tickets, the premium couple seating tickets add the bonus of a chance to win a free overnight stay in a hotel. The wine tasting will start at 6:30 p.m. and will also include a chance to win some great raffle prizes and support two local non-profit organizations.
The River Music Experience (RME) is a non-profit performing arts center providing opportunities for the community to listen to, learn about, and play music.
