Dennis M. Freed, 73, of Rock Island, passed away Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013, at his home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Rafferty Funeral Home, 2111 1st St. A, Moline, with a Christian wake service at 3:30 p.m. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Rock Island. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to St. Pius X Church.
Dennis was born Oct. 3, 1939, in Rock Island, the son of Harold "Pete" and Marie Cockerill Freed. He married Joan Adlfinger on April 15, 1961, in Rock Island.
Dennis graduated from Alleman High School in 1957 and attended classes at Black Hawk College and St. Ambrose University.
In his youth, he worked at the Rock Island Boat Club and enjoyed fishing and trapping. In 1957 he began working at International Harvester in the mail room. He held several positions until his retirement as supervisor of industrial engineering for JI Case in 1989. Dennis also was a board member of the Managerial Club at JI Case.
Dennis was a lifelong member of St. Pius X Church, Rock Island. He enjoyed fishing from his bass boat and the many trips he took to Wisconsin and Canada. He also was an avid hunter, spending many days with his sons and dogs chasing pheasants. Dennis was a Junior Achievement advisor. Other pursuits included golf, archery, biking, target shooting and cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes. He will be remembered as an outdoorsman, a loving father and a devoted husband.
Survivors include his wife, Joan; sons and daughters in-law, Jim and Sheryl Freed, Rock Island, Steve, M.D. and Rhonda, M.D. Freed, Milan, and Jeffrey, M.D. and Joanne Freed, Minneapolis, Minn.; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; mother, Marie Freed, Milan; and sisters, Suzanne Buddin, Milan, Barbara Jo Laughin, Milan, Judy Freed, Milan, Mary Rodamsky, Milan, DeeDee Bradley, Rock Island, and Donna Hoke, Milan. He was preceded in death by his father, Pete.
