UT inducting 1970 boys' basketball team into school's hall of fame

United Township announced its 2013 Hall of Fame class, which will be inducted during halftime of Friday's Western Big 6 Conference boys' basketball game against Alleman at the Panther Den.

Joining the UT Hall of Fame is the school's 1970 boys' basketball team. The Panthers finished that season as the single-class state runner-up, dropping a 71-52 contest to LaGrange Lyons in the state final.

That season produced the school's first sectional title and the first 30-win season by an Illinois Quad-Cities Metro team. UT topped Pittsfield, 75-54, in the Macomb Super-Sectional at Western Hall behind Bob Hunter's team-high 22 points.

Making its first state appearance at the Assembly Hall in Champaign, UT outlasted LaSalle-Peru, 68-66, in the state quarterfinal. Hunter and Malcolm Samuels each had 14 points in the game. The Panthers then earned a 77-59 win over Peoria Spalding in the state semifinals as Hunter tallied 17 points.

Craig Davis' 16 points paced the Panthers in their title loss. Also in UT's starting five was Tommy Haliburton and Daryl Griffin. Haliburton and Samuels were on the all-tournament team.

The Panthers, coached by Cliff Talley, finished the season with a 30-3 record. The second-place finish still remains the highest in school history.

Also to be inducted are a pair not related to sports -- Ann Schotka Schneider ('78 grad), whose long careeras a government employee of the state of Illinois hasled to her current position as the Secretary for the Illinois Department of Transportation, and Darrell Bush ('79 grad),a world renowned illustrator.
