With just one win in 10 Lincoln Trail Conference girls' basketball outings and a 5-19 overall record, this hasn't exactly been the most memorable of seasons for the United Red Storm.
However, coach Fred Lucas's club hopes to put all of that behind them as they seek a fresh start beginning with tonight's 8 p.m. semifinal game at the Class 1A Abingdon Regional, where United is seeded second behind Lewistown.
The Red Storm open against the third-seeded Lady Commandos, and it will be their third trip to the Abingdon gymnasium this season, having split two previous meetings.
"The difference was that we made a lot of baskets one night," quipped Lucas. "That's been the story for us coming out of Christmas. We'll be off one night, on the other. We've been getting decent shots; we're just struggling with our percentage right now."
Led by senior guard Cassandra Ellison's 10 points per game, the Red Storm have also gotten a spark from the lone junior in their starting rotation, 5-foot-8 forward Callie Brunswig, who gives them seven points and four rebounds per evening.
With the comparative balance between the teams at Abingdon, Lucas hopes a hot streak is in the offing to bring United its first regional basketball championship.
"If we can get to the final,'' he said, "anything can happen."
