Verna Jean Nelson Harmon, 79, of Sycamore, Ill., formerly of Erie, died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013, at her home surrounded by her family.
Visitation will be Saturday, Feb. 2, from 9 to 11 a.m. with services following at 11 a.m. at United Methodist Church, Erie. The Rev. Rod Dye will officiate. Burial is at Erie Cemetery. Sullivan-Ellis Mortuary, East Moline, is assisting the family.
Memorials may be made to the DeKalb County Hospice, 2727 Sycamore Road, Suite 1B, DeKalb, Ill. 60115; Cancer Center at Kishwaukee Community Hospital, 10 Health Services Drive, DeKalb, Ill., 60115; and United Methodist Church, Erie.
Jean was born Jan. 28, 1934, in Sterling, Ill., the daughter of Vernon B. and Ruth E. Eddy Avery. She married John Freude, later marrying Melvin Lindy Nelson, and after his death, Gary Harmon.
She was a secretary of new accounts at the Erie State Bank for 25 years, retiring in 2000. She owned and operated Jean's Beauty Shop and was former owner and operator of The Pink Pony Drive-in.
She volunteered at a preschool after Lindy (Melvin Nelson) passed away and went to New Orleans and helped with the Hurricane Katrina recovery. She also did mission work with her husband, Gary. Jean and Lindy were treasurers of the United Methodist Church. She was always volunteering. She also was a greeter at Sullivan-Ellis Mortuary.
She is survived by her sons, Jeffrey (Laurie) Wolf Freude, Des Moines, Iowa, Michael (Dawn) Freude, Franklin Grove, Ill.; daughter, Janelle (Jerry) Flieder, Sycamore; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brothers, Ronald L. (Helen) Marlowe Avery, Abingdon, Va., Arlyn R. (Judy) Avery, Erie; a host of nieces and nephews; stepdaughters, Angela (Patrick) Roegher, Toledo, Ohio, Lori White, Bowling Green, Ohio; stepsons, Eric (Stephania) Harmon, Delta, Ohio, Brad (Dixie) Harmon, Deshler, Ohio; and several stepgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and husbands, Lindy Nelson and Gary Harmon.
