Mallards can't get past Sundogs for 8th place

PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz.-- After winning their previous two games by a combined score of 12-1, the Quad City Mallards had to endure a white-knuckle finale Saturday night on the road in Arizona.
The Mallards (17-18-5) picked up a standings point, but fell in a 3-2 shootout loss against the Sundogs (19-20-4) at Tim's Toyota Center in Prescott Valley.
The Sundogs' Jake Hauswirth and Derek LeBlanc finished off the scoring in the shootout to give Arizona the win.
The QC's Anthony Perdicaro was the only Mallards player to find the net in the shootout.
Arizona (42 points and in eighth place) kept the Mallards (39 points and in ninth place) looking up at them in the Berry Conference standings. The top eight teams in the 10-team league advance to the playoffs in March.
The Mallards' Mike Hellyer scored what looked to be the winning goal at 12:18 in the third period, but the Sundogs wouldn't go away.
Off a faceoff in the Mallards' end, Arizona's LeBlanc came up with a lose puck and found Jason Morgan in front of the net to tie the game at two with 14:11 left to play.
Quad City's fell behind in the second period. The Sundogs' Hauswirth scored on the game's first power-play opportunity at the 2:32 mark.
The Flock answered with 6:18 remaining in the second period. Defenseman Matt Duffy scored his fourth goal of the season, tying the game at one.
Quad City netminder John Murray followed up his first shutout of the season with another solid outing, stopping 32-of-34 shots.
Former Mallards goalie Adam Russo rode the pine after the Mallards roughed up the CHL's Goaltender of the Week for five goals on Friday night.
Instead, the Mallards saw another familiar netminder in David Brown, who spent last season with the club.Brown put up a respectable night, stoppiong 32-of-34 stops.
Quad City returns to the i wireless Center on Tuesday against Bloomington, with the puck dropping at 7 p.m.
