MURPHYSBORO, Ill. (AP) — A southern Illinois man has been declared mentally fit to stand trial on charges that accuse him of killing a toddler under his care last year.

The (Carbondale) Southern Illinoisan reports that a psychiatrist who examined 24-year-old Jarrod Rudder of Elkville found him competent to face trial in Jackson County on first-degree murder charges.

Rudder has pleaded not guilty in the April 2012 death of 2-year-old Michael Pulliam, who suffered bleeding on the brain and several broken bones and contusions.

Authorities contend Rudder grabbed Michael's wrist and swung the child by the arm into a wall and a lamp while the boy's mother was at work.

Rudder's trial is scheduled to begin March 29. He's jailed on $1 million bond.
