If you think LeClaire is a pretty cool town, Budget Travel magazine wants to hear from you.
The town is among 15 finalists in the magazine's eighth annual "Coolest Small Town in America" contest. After 924 nominations, 96,605 votes and 2,415 comments, Budget Travel whittled down the list to the 15 coolest of the cool, which also includes Mount Carroll, near Savanna, 60 miles northeast of the Quad-Cities.
LeClaire was nominated by the former head of the LeClaire Tourism Bureau, said Joe Taylor, president/CEO of the Quad Cities Convention and Visitors Bureau. The Iowa Quad-Cities seems to be a favorite for Budget Travel; last May it named Davenport one of the top 11 riverfront towns in the nation, Mr. Taylor noted.
The online summary about LeClaire mentions the Mississippi River, the riverboat Twilight, "Buffalo Bill" Cody, the Mississippi River Distilling Co. and the "town's coolest annual celebration: Tugfest," the tug-of-war across the river with Port Byron.
The "Coolest Small Town" contest goes until Feb. 15 with winners featured in a future issue. Peoplecan vote once every 24 hours at budgettravel.com/contest/americas-coolest-small-towns-2013,14/#candidate-detail12245.
Last year's winners (a tie) were Beaufort, S.C., and Hammondsport, N.Y.
