Verdia Mae Blanks, 89, of Kewanee, passed away peacefully at 3:06 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013, at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf, surrounded by her family.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church in Kewanee. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, at Rux Funeral Home in Kewanee. Burial will be at Evergreen Memory Gardens in rural Kewanee. Memorials may be directed to Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House.
She was a longtime housewife, then later worked at Kewanee Care for Senior Citizens as head cook. She was a lifetime devoted member of the Church of God in Christ. She loved being surrounded by all her children. She loved gardening, cooking and canning.
Verdia Mae Clayton was born Feb. 5, 1923, in Daleville, Miss., to Willie and Ollie Clayton. She married Gus Blanks Sr. on Nov. 23, 1940, in Meridian, Miss., and he preceded her in death on Dec. 28, 1999.
Survivors include daughters, Callie (Charles) Brock, Ollie (Lawrance) Owens, Gladys (William) Bell, Lily (Ronald) Bea and Monica Blanks, Moline; sons, Sheree (Mary), Jackson, Miss., Leroy, Peoria, Ill., Fred (Jennie), Gus Jr., James, Davenport, Lindsey, Rock Island, Floyd (Anita), Robert (Kathy), Richard (Patricia), Davenport, and Edward (Tammy). She leaves in loving memory 46 grandchildren, 70 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren, and her sister, Willa Mae Talbert. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Deloris Blanks; sons, Earl and Lindzy; brothers, Carl Clayton and Ambrose Clayton; sister, Victoria Rice; grandsons, Daniel Blanks-Bailey and Tyrone Howell; daughter-in-law, Mildred Blanks; granddaughter, Theresa Blanks; and her loving parents. She leaves with loving memories her sister-in-law, Lila Clayton-Swain; and close friends, Marietta Jackson and Minnie Reed.
