James L. Cox, 81, of East Moline, died on Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, 6601 38th Ave., Moline. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Per his wishes, cremation rites will be accorded following the service and burial of cremains will be at Rose-Lawn Memorial Estates at a later date. Memorials may be made to University of Iowa Hospitals.
James was born on Feb. 16, 1931, in Moline, the son of John H. and Eva Pauline Hensley Cox. He married Betty Baney on Jan. 29, 1955, in Moline. She and James were just a couple weeks away from their 58th wedding anniversary.
James worked as a tool and die maker for John Deere Harvester, East Moline, retiring in 1985. He was a United States Navy veteran. James enjoyed motorcycle repair, fishing and hunting, as well as boating and tinkering around the house.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Cox, East Moline; daughters, Paula (Chris) Vargas, Dana, Iowa, Mary Beth (Mike) Bale, Moline; son, Laird C. Cox, Rock Island; grandchildren, Jessie, Kevin, Daniel and Steven; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Daniel J. Cox.
