Press release submitted by Midwest Writing Center

On February 2nd from 1 to 3 p.m., Midwest Writing Center is offering a workshop about writing from prompts, "Subverting Prompts: Moving Through the Words to (Re)Create meaning." It is designed to help contestants get ready for its annual Iron Pen Contest held on February 15th and 16th or anyone interested in learning how using prompts can spur their creative writing.

Jane Carman, former multiple Iron Pen winner, will lead the workshop which will use strategies to prepare writers to (re)work their prompts by thinking of them as words that are simultaneously mere and powerful as well as potential for dialogue, titles, or appropriated text. Attendees will practice turning prompts into writing that feels more like original work than a labored or forbidden product of the imagination. The goal of the workshop is to help participants learn how to look at writing prompts as favors instead of as punishment and as ways of moving through text rather than stifling text.

The cost of the workshop is $10 for those who have participated in Iron Pen in the past or who plan to participate in 2013 and $15 for everyone else. Entrants in the Iron Pen Contest will receive a writing prompt via email at 5 p.m. on February 15th and will have until 5 p.m. the next day to submit their original poetry, fiction, or essay. Winners will receive a medal and be invited to read their winning poems at the Awards Ceremony on February 23rd at 2 p.m.

Participation in Iron Pen is NOT a requirement for taking this workshop which will take place at Midwest Writing Center located on the 3rd floor of the Bucktown Center for the Arts in Downtown Davenport. Information and registration for the workshop as well as the Iron Pen contest is available online at www.midwestwritingcenter.org. Questions will be answered via phone at 563-324-1410 and email at mwc@midwestwritingcenter.org.
