Letter: Teacher-staff concealed carry should be legal
Comment on this story
We have two very different solutions being proposed to prevent another mass shooting in American schools.
President Obama, and his supporters think going after gun owners is an answer. It is not. It is rather, the president using another "crisis" to push an agenda.
National Rifle Association CEO Wayne LaPierre has proposed an armed officer at each school to prevent another occurrence. While this makes more sense, it is costly, and not stealthy enough.
The problem with Obama's plan is age-old. The bad guys will still have guns, while the law abiding average citizen is systematically disarmed. (Look at Chicago, his hometown, where gun control reigns and so do shootings). At the same time, LaPierre's plan is not really economically feasible, or again, stealthy enough.
To me, the best solution is teacher-staff conceal and carry. Make it affordable for teachers and/or staff to go through the necessary background checks and training to conceal and carry, voluntarily of course.
There may be schools where three or four staff would be armed -- other schools where there may be no armed staff. The idea is to send the message to those who have this kind of school shooting on their minds, that there is now no safe place to break and enter. Should someone still try this evil, there is a much greater chance to stop or limit the damage than waiting for police help.
We can combat this growing problem in a reasonable, lawful way, without violating our Second Amendment rights, or the cost of adding an officer per school.
