CORDOVA — Cordova village treasurer Michele Chavez is resigning, effective Jan. 31,
the village board learned Thursday night.

Mayor Bob VanHooreweghe handed a copy of Ms. Chavez' brief letter of resignation to members of the board. It said, "I have enjoyed working for the NICE people of Cordova."

Ms. Chavez declined further comment.

She has been criticized for recent actions as a stand-in for the village clerk when she accepted petitions of candidacy in the upcoming village election but refused to provide copies of them to board members and the public.

In other business, Trustee Dean Moyer asked the mayor to appoint a finance committee chairperson and a parks and recreation chairperson at next week's business meeting. Mr. Moyer said if there is not a new finance chairman appointed there will be a problem with paying the bills.

The two committees have lacked chairs since Sept. 20. when the mayor removed John Myers as finance chairman and John Haan as parks and recreation chairman.

The mayor announced that the maintenance department will be interviewing for a job opening in addition to the immediate hiring of a part-time water/sewer clerk.
