Alleman's Sean Wetherell tightens his grip on Sherrard's Zach Gustafson during their 170-pound bout at Alleman High School in Rock Island on Thursday, January 10, 2013.
Throughout this season, Sherrard wrestling coach Jeff Garrett has stressed that his youthful roster must take advantage of any learning opportunities.

Thursday night provided one.

Despite watching his team earn a 55-18 win over Alleman at the Casey Gym, Garrett would not embrace fully the result. In his mind, the inexperience showed in certain matches.

"Some of them didn't wrestle well," Garrett said. "We could've done better. A win is a win, but it could've been better. There are things to work on."

In winning for the 10th time in 15 duals, the Tigers, ranked 25th in the latest Illinois Best Weekly Class 1A poll, had a 24-0 lead from the start since Alleman forfeited four weights. Expecting his team to still perform to his expectations, Garrett felt Sherrard was missing some intensity.

The Pioneers took advantage, getting consecutive decision wins from Sterling Mowen (138 pounds) and Jacob Orth (145) to offset Sam Ryner's 132-pound fall in the opening bout.

"We talked about going out there, fighting and battling hard," said Alleman coach James Ealy, who received falls from Sean Wetherell (170) and Ben West (220). "We did that pretty well. ... The kids are showing heart and they're getting better."

Other than those four bouts, Sherrard did not lose as it won the final five bouts by fall or forfeit. Jacob Hast (120), Jacob Doak (126) and Ben Corlett (285) each logged second first-period pins. Dylan Mizaur (160) secured a major decision.

Hunter Spengler (106), Chance Teel (113), Sam Congdon (182) and Jon Stoops (195) earned forfeit victories.

"They're learning," Garrett said. "For some of them, it's a slow process. Others have the grasp at what's at hand. We still have work to do."

Most of the improvements need to happen when the Tigers are in control.

"We've got to ride better, we've got to finish our pinning combinations and we've got to adjust our halves," Garrett said. "We let guys to their feet too easy."

As soon as the dual ended, Garrett made sure he got his message across. Even in a victory,

"It was a win, but not a pretty one," Garrett said. "I won't say it's ugly, but it wasn't pretty."
