CARTHAGE -- All of the progress the Sherrard boys' basketball team madein the second quarter Friday night was wiped out after halftime.

The Tigers nearly erased a 12-point deficit to Illini West, cutting the leadto two early in the second half. But the Chargers turned up the pressureduring the third quarter, outscoring Sherrard 22-5 in the third quarter of a61-47 West Central Conference North Division victory.

The Tigers (4-12, 0-4) committed 10 of their 19 turnovers in the third quarter.

"Making 10 turnovers in an entire game is OK, but it's a little much for onequarter," Sherrard coach Barry Jackson said. "We'd get the ball to thesideline and they'd push us to turn the ball over or we'd throw it out ofbounds. Illini West has too much quickness for us to be able to get awaywith that."

After trailing 31-27 at halftime, Sherrard cut the lead to 33-30 when DevinDavis converted a three-point play with 6 minutes, 53 seconds left in thethird quarter. After a Chargers turnover, Jake Kissner was fouled and made afree throw to make the score 33-31.

Illini West (6-4, 3-1) answered with a 20-0 run, capped off when BrodyGronewold caught an outlet pass from Levi Kirby and sank a 3-pointer for a53-31 lead with 1:09 left in the third quarter.

"We came out in the third quarter and our zone really shut them down," Illini Westcoach John Hughs said. "We kept them from getting good looks and itreally stifled their penetration. It was a big key for us."

The Tigers' best stretch of the game came during the final four minutes ofthe first half. Gronewold, who finished with a game-high 23 points, made asteal and scored for a 29-17 lead with 4:04 left in the half. A 8-0 Sherrardrun -- capped off by Jake Coyne's steal and layup -- cut the lead to 29-25
with 1:58 left. After Ethan Neally scored for Illini West, Nathan Fay scoredthe final basket of the half.

"Throughout the entire game, even the third quarter, we played with a lot ofdiscipline," Jackson said. "Sure there are a lot of 'what ifs?' But it camedown to Illini West putting pressure on us and us not responding very well."

Clayton Bjustrom led Sherrard with 10 points, while Davis grabbed 11rebounds.
