A water main leak near the Augustana College football stadium on 5th Avenue in Rock Island was causing some slippery driving conditions Wednesday.

City crews were working to find and fix the leak and salting the road to reduce the risk of cars slipping on the ice, Rock Island Public Works Director Bob Hawes said.

He said the leak began about a week ago but only started to cause problems when water started "sheeting across the road" and freezing.

The eastbound side of 5th Avenue is worst affected, Mr. Hawes said, adding that the leak was small and had not been the highest on the city's list of priorities for repairs until it began to pose a risk to drivers.
