Richard L. Samuelson, 72, of Taylor Ridge, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2012, at Tampa General Hospital, Tampa, Fla.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 4, 2013, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Taylor Ridge. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Milan, where a rosary will be recited at 4 p.m. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Rock Island. Memorials may be made in Richard's name to St. Patrick's Catholic Church for Masses or to Quad Cities Right to Life.
Richard was born on Feb. 5, 1940, in Newton, Iowa, the son of Phillip Carl Samuelson and Myrna Lorraine Fee. He attended Rock Island public schools.
Mr. Samuelson was a United States Navy veteran having served from 1957-1961.
He married Marilyn J. Schaecher on June 4, 1971, in the former St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Rock Island.
Richard had been employed at John Deere Harvester, East Moline, for 30 years before his retirement in 1989.
Mr. Samuelson was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, where he served as Eucharistic minister, Quad Cities Right to Life, UAW Local 865, Largo Florida Elks Club and was a former member of the Andalusia Lions Club, Rock Island Moose, Rock Island Knights of Columbus and Second Chance Organ Donation.
Richard loved to watch his children and grandchildren participate in sports, where he was their proudest and loudest cheerleader. He looked forward to his yearly walleye fishing trip with his friends to Ohio, enjoyed golfing and was proud of his accidental hole-in-one. He also enjoyed attending Classic Car Shows, where he made many great friendships and wintering in Florida.
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn; children (and their spouses), JoDee (Derek) Stoneking, Andalusia, Cynthia (Perry) Nelson, Bettendorf, Scott Reid, Durant; grandchildren, Amanda (Bryan) Rudsell, Rockford, Scott F. Reid, Rock Island, Len (Angela) Reid, Moline, Michael Reid, Milan, Ashley Stoneking, Davenport, Allyson (Michael) Stoneking, Rock Island; great-grandchildren, Alexis and Josalyn McCluskey, Rockford, Owen and Lillian Reid, Rock Island, Adyson Reid, Moline; siblings, Sharon (Roger) Clarke, Milan, Larry Samuelson, Milan, Randy (Wendy) Samuelson, Moline; many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his son, Shawn Finnie; parents, Phillip and Myrna Samuelson; and brother, Bill Samuelson.
