The January 2013 issue of Radish, featuring the winners of the 2013 Radish Awards.
Every January, Radish magazine features winners of the annual Radish Awards, individuals and organizations making a positive difference in our communities. The stories of their commitment to a healthy future will inspire you.
The winners of the 2012 Radish Awards are:
-- Scott Koepke: During the 2011-2012 school year, this garden educator in Iowa City reached 7,900 school children with lessons about composting and the value of the ground at our feet.
-- Monmouth College Garden House: A group of students at Monmouth College have traded dorm life for tending the college garden, raising their own food and sharing what they learn along the way.
– The Waste Commission of Scott County: In 2012, the steps taken by the waste commission to recycle electronics responsibly earned it the first R2 certification in the world.
– The Clinton County Conservation Board: The CCCB offers first-hand experiences of the Mississippi River ecology through river tours on the Blue Heron boat and educational programming at the newly opened Eco-Tourism Center.
– New Hope Catholic Worker Farm: This collective of growers puts their commitment to sustainable agriculture and social justice into action on a farm outside of Dubuque, Iowa.
Other features in the January Radish include a recipe for sweet potato chili, 10-minute fitness ideas from the experts, a trip to the grocery store with a Hy-Vee dietician, reader reviews of recent books on healthy living and one writer's reflections on her new year resolution: to learn to love—and laugh at—life's little imperfections.
