1862 — 150 years ago: Temple Buford, of this city has been appointed by the president asa Lieutenant in the 5th U.S. Cavalry — regular army. This, of course, is a life appointment.
1887 — 125 years ago: The Rev. G. W. Gue of Rock Island today received a gold GARbadge from Brysen Post Peoria, where he served as chaplain for three years.
1912 — 100 years ago: Charles H. Deere's estate has donated a park site to the city ofMoline between 7th and 9th Streets and 13th and 16th Avenues.
1937 — 75 years ago: The Argus Santa Claus put on ice creepers and delivered gifts to2,214 needy tots in the city on the eve of Christmas.
1962 — 50 years ago: Something new for this area in the way of outdoor Christmaslighting displays appeared at two Quad-City homes this year. Mr. and Mrs.Wilfred Hinde, 2449 27th St., Moline, and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Liggitt, 1306 22nd Ave., Rock Island, probably are among the first to introduce soft-glowing Luminaries to thearea. Each family did it without the knowledge the other was doing so too.
1987 — 25 years ago: One more time, with feeling: Don't drive drunk on New Year's,and do wear your seatbelt. Of all traffic deaths, 80 percent are alcohol-related, saidMoline police Sgt. Steve Etheridge. This year, Moline had three traffic fatalities, and twowere alcohol-related. Through Dec. 23 of this year, Moline police officers had made 465arrests on charges of driving under the influence.
