1862 — 150 years ago: The gunboat Cairo was destroyed by a torpedo which explodedunder the port bow, while that boat and several others were on a trip up the Yahoo to taketorpedoes out of the river. The damaged boat sank in six fathoms of water within nineminutes, but all on board escaped.
1887 — 125 years ago: W. J. Browne last night was elected president of the Rock IslandBranch of the Irish National Land League.
1912 — 100 years ago: Robert Karlowa and Walter Berwald are operating a wirelessstation at the Best Building. They have heard messages from as far away as Panama.
