Rock Island, Ill-The Augustana College Art Museum will present an informal discussion relating art in its current exhibition to music on January 12, from 1:30-2:45 p.m. The exhibition's catalog, Liberal Arts through the AGES: Interdisciplinary Art Historical Inquiry 2012–2013, serves as a common text for first-year students and has become a national model for art history education. The program will be led by Augustana College faculty and will be free and open to the public.
The program will begin with an introduction by Dr. Catherine Goebel, Paul A. Anderson Chair in the Arts and professor of art history. Dr. Catherine Goebel is creator, editor and faculty curator for the exhibition and corresponding book.
Dr. Deborah Dakin, having previously taught for the AGES program, Augustana's first-year liberal arts sequence, will share insight on the historical relationships between music and visual art. Dr. Dakin is principal violist for the Quad City Symphony Orchestra and adjunct assistant professor of music at Augustana. Joining the discussion will be Dr. Frederick Jaeschke, who designed the CD that musically parallels both the art historical approach and illustrations in the interdisciplinary AGES book. Dr. Jaeschke is associate professor of music and directs the college's concert band. Another contributor to the AGES book, Dr. Daniel Culver, will speak to his essay regarding Gustav Mahler. Dr. Culver is Henry Veld Professor of Music, music director of the Augustana Symphony Orchestra and co-chair of the department of music. This collaborative program will conclude with enhanced listening to music selections.
The exhibition continues through February 9 (closed holiday break December 14–January 7). Art museum hours are noon to 4 p.m., Tuesdays through Saturdays, and there is no admission charge. The art museum is located at the front of Centennial Hall, at the northwest corner of the intersection of 7th Avenue and 38th Street.
