"I'll be home for Christmas project."
An account has been opened at Bank Orion by a local Lutheran minister and a teacher who ask for your help in the "I'll be home for Christmas project." Donations can be made to Bank Orion at any Q. C. location or in Orion, Aledo, Annawan or Cambridge to be used to help students and parents who are living in motels or shelters find other living arrangements by Christmas. Luckily a local Q. C. motel is housing people by the week or month due to a shelter shortage. There is not enough room in the Q. C. shelters. One student from IL had to go to live in Clinton, IA with her Mom because there was no room in either the IL or IA side of the river. Let's all be like George Bailey in "It's a Wonderful Life" and help students have a place to live so they can say "I'll have a home by Christmas" not just in their dreams.
PBS recently aired Poor Kids and the documentary told the real facts and interviewed three "kids" who were living in either shelters or a motel in the Q. C. area.
How can one help with this permanent project?
1) Pray for the success of this project so that by next year all families living in 12 by 17ft. or 12 by 19 ft. motel rooms on a permanent basis can either move to a shelter or new living arrangements. There are currently seven families living in a local motel.
2) Donate furniture, bedding, household items and clothing to Goodwill, Salvation Army, or Winnie's Wishes. All new living arrangements for families will be furnished by one or all of these wonderful stores.
The locations are listed below:
a.) Winnie's Wishes, 902 E. River Dr., Davenport, IA, Hours are Mon. –Fri. from 10 to 4 before the holiday and on Sat. 10-1
Winnies' is a shop with a purpose. You are helping Winnie's (women in need nurtured in excellence) Place, a domestic abuse shelter for women and children, every time you shop, volunteer, or donate items.
b.) Goodwill has a Christmas (only store) at South Park mall, Moline. Other store locations are listed in the phone book.
c.) Salvation Army store locations are also listed in the phone book.
3) Send monetary donations to Bank Orion. Make the check out to "I'll be home for Christmas." The money will be used to pay the deposit and the rent for one month. It will also help furnish an unfurnished apartment.
Addresses are listed below.
Bank Orion, 1114 4th St. Orion, IL 61273
Route 6, HWY 150, Moline, IL 61265
3701 69th Ave., Moline, IL 61265

5301 44th Ave Dr.-John Deere Rd., Moline, IL 61265
201 W. Main St., Aledo, IL 61231
302 W. Front St., Annawan, IL 61234
201 N. Prospect St., Cambridge, IL 61238
4) Donate the use of housing for a family for six months including the damage deposit so that they can have time to shop for their household items at one of the thrift stores by working there as a volunteer in order to obtain what they need. They would be paid in items rather than money. The living arrangement would be furnished for them, but they would start to collect items to move into their own place within six months. Donators would set their own specific rules for each living arrangement. Contact can be made to Bethany Home for donations of housing for families.
Let's all help our children of the Quad Cities have a merrier Christmas. God bless us all.
