Letter: Cities need to look for something besides Walmart
Comment on this story
Whoopie! The City of Rock Island has snagged yet another Walmart for the Illinois Quad-Cities! How many Walmarts does that make within a 10 mile radius of the Illinois Q-C, four?
Oh yes, and lets not forget the new Fareway grocery that's going to be opening up a block away from Hy-Vee on 18th Avenue in Rock Island, the one that they're tearing down the beautiful old Audubon School building for.
I understand the need for jobs and tax revenue, but why can't the Illinois Q-C attract some other kinds of businesses?
I know a lot of people would love to see a Michaels, or Hobby Lobby, Barnes & Noble, maybe some of the wonderful restaurants that can only be found in Iowa right now, such as Red Lobster, Olive Garden, or Outback Steakhouse.
Why is NorthPark Mall thriving, while SouthPark Mall is emptying out? Every time I travel to one of the aforementioned Iowa businesses, I see quite a few cars with Illinois license plates.
If you would like to see Illinoisans spend their money here in the Illinois QC, city councils here on the Illinois side need to start working to attract some businesses other than Walmart.
Until we get some of those Iowa-located businesses here in Illinois, I for one, will continue to spend my money on the Iowa side of the Quad-Cities.
