American Red Cross and Illinois General Assembly Showing Support for Military Members This Holiday Season
Red Cross Providing/Collecting Holiday Cards for Members of the Armed Forces at Illinois State Capitol on 11/28
November 27, 2012 – This Wednesday, November 28, American Red Cross personnel and members of the Illinois General Assembly will be showing support for military members, veterans, and military families by signing holiday cards at the Illinois State Capitol.
It's part of the Red Cross Holiday Mail for Heroes program, which collects and distributes holiday cards of encouragement, gratitude and cheer to members of the U.S. Armed Forces all over the world. The program ends on December 7 to ensure that cards are delivered in time for the holidays.
Members of the press, legislature, and community can stop by the Red Cross booth in the Stratton Building outside the cafeteria starting at 11 a.m. to drop off a holiday card or fill one out.
Pitney Bowes Inc. receives cards at the special Holiday Mail post office box and screens them for hazardous materials. They will then package and ship the cards at no charge. Red Cross volunteers across the United States and on military installations overseas then sort and deliver the cards throughout the holiday season.
Individuals are asked to refrain from sending "care packages," monetary donations, or using glitter or any other kinds of inserts with the cards. More information and card requirements are at redcross.org/holidaymail.
The Red Cross relies on the support of the American people to carry out its mission of service to the 2 million members of the U.S. Armed Forces, 24 million veterans and their families. During this holiday season, people also can support all Red Cross services by making a financial donation at redcross.org or by calling 1-800-REDCROSS.
