Letter: 17th needs a strong leader to work for all constituents

Comment on this story

To our newly elected 17th District representative:

January you begin representing us regardless of political views. You spoke of "bipartisanship" hopefully following in the ways of LBJ's approach to bipartisanship and unifying all.

You must "walk your talk" and take a clear, defined leadership role in "bipartisanship" to re-energize our 17th District and all of America! You are not a puppet of the Democratic political machine as you represent us! We expect you to be honorable, truthful and maintain the highest degree of integrity as you serve on our behalf.

Your election doesn't ensure that you are a leader. Leadership is earned not given based upon whims of a party. America will need new politicians like you to step up, be accountable and impact our district, our lives and American lives in positive ways. Only positive leadership changes the ills of America. We expect you to be a change agent and maintain the greatness of America. You can be a problem solver, creative, inquisitive and by having a "common sense" approach and willingness to compromise, you can be a leader, not a follower!

You have a unique opportunity to do the right things for America and us. You must meet the challenges of keeping the American Dream alive for all future generations so that children have hope and access to it!

We are a diverse group in our thinking and our viewpoints. We all believe in America; our freedoms, our liberties, our rights, equality for all, individualism, most of all we believe in unity of these differences.

We expect you to treat us all the same not the majority who put you in DC but also the minority who do not vote for you.

Larry Chapman,
Port Byron
