New Boston Angel Tree

Press release submitted by Natalie Thompson
Each year a small committee of women from our fire department, ambulance service and local churches get together and help the City of New Boston with the Food Baskets that they sponsor. But 5 years ago the committee started doing an Angel Tree for the children of the community that come from struggling families also. We gather ideas of children from different community related agencies, local churches and by word of mouth from members of our community. We have 53 children through out our community with households that cannot afford much during this Christmas season.
The basics of the Angel Tree is that a paper ornament is made up for each child on our list. On this ornament we list the child's sex, age, clothing size and if possible an idea for a toy. The people wanting to participate take an ornament with the child's info, leave the 2nd identical ornament (which is attached to the labeled ornament) behind with their name and phone number (of the donor), shop for the child and return the gift item (preferably wrapped) with the paper ornament attached by the 10th of December. There is also an "instruction" sheet located at the Angel Tree that the donors can take a copy of to assist them in following thru correctly with their gift or gifts. We then organize the gifts and deliver them to the families with a message that Santa is too busy to make all his deliveries without our help.
We have at least 39 ornaments left on our tree and the committee can't afford to buy for all of the children without going door to door asking for money.
The Angel Tree is located at The Bay C Store in New Boston, IL.
