Letter: Tell Moline to say no to more corporate welfare

Comment on this story

Residents of Moline, are you having difficulty buying groceries, paying bills and making ends meet? Are you tired of having government look for more ways to take your money? Then you won't like what follows!

Over the past few years, Moline has implemented a new sales tax, utility tax, food and beverage tax and just approved an increase in sanitation fees. They gave the city administrator's six figure income an increase, and the mayor's position is also in line for an increase. All this, when Moody's report says the city has an above average debt position despite the new taxes.
Now they want to subsidize wealthy corporations with more tax increment funding (TIF).

For example, Genesis (the same corporation that operates many hospitals) wants tax dollars to subsidize a new medical complex in Moline. The feasibility report says that without tax assistance they would need to charge above-market rent for medical office space.

Genesis wants to consolidate its operations by moving doctors and staff across the street to a fancy new building using tax dollars to subsidize this (like doctors and hospitals don't make enough as it is). This is only one of three TIF's proposed.

If you are tired of paying more to government only to see it go to wealthy corporations, then contact your alderman now to vote NO!
They can be found at http://www.moline.il.us/index.aspx?nid=469.

If they say it's not tax dollars, ask about the millions advanced to a TIF in 2009 not to be repaid until 2022.

Robert Lazenby,
Moline
