Beverly J. King, 86, of Milan, died Friday, Nov. 16, 2012, at her home, surrounded by her family.
Funeral services are 10 a.m. on Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church, Milan. Burial is at Chippiannock Cemetery, Rock Island. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Milan. Memorials may be made to the Sherrard Education Foundation.
Beverly Wangelin was born May 6, 1926, in Rock Island, the daughter of Hugh and Mary Tindall Wangelin. She married William H. King Jr. on Oct. 12, 1951, at Pleasant Ridge Church, rural Milan. He died Feb. 19, 1989.
Beverly graduated from Western Illinois University with a bachelor's degree in education and received a master's degree from the University of Nebraska. She began her teaching career at Lincoln School, Rock Island, where she taught for two years. Beverly then taught at the New Windsor Grade School and later at Winola High School, where she was an English teacher and unit librarian, retiring in 1986, after 38 years as an educator. For a time during her retirement, she volunteered to help students with their reading skills at Coyne Center Grade School.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Milan, was an avid reader and enjoyed playing the piano. She was happiest at home on her farm, which has been in her family for several generations. She loved spending time with her family and was the world's best listener. Her two grandsons were the lights of her life.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Karen King, Milan; grandsons, Bill and Brian King, Milan; brother and sister-in-law, John and Norma Wangelin, Milan; and nieces and nephew, Carolyn (Mark) Minteer, Milan, Ben (Jackie) Wangelin, Taylor Ridge, Elizabeth (Lenny) Lipe, Andalusia, and their children. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
