Rep. Jackson's opponents campaign before election

Comment on this story

CHICAGO (AP) — Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. remains hospitalized, but his little-known opponents are bringing up his name often on the day before the election.

Jackson faces three challengers who experts predict have little chance of unseating a Chicago Democrat who's easily won each election since 1995.

On the ballot are Republican Brian Woodworth and Marcus Lewis, who's an independent candidate. The Rev. Anthony Williams is running a spirited write-in campaign.

All three have made Jackson's health and allegations of corruption central themes in their campaigns.

Jackson's father, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, says his son will watch election returns from the Mayo Clinic. The elder Jackson says his son is focused on improving his health right now.

The congressman checked back into the Minnesota hospital last month to be treated for bipolar disorder.
