Vice President Joe Biden stopped for breakfast at Ross' 24 Hour Restaurant this morning, enjoying a plate of bacon and eggs and swapping stories with staff.

Melissa Friedhof-Rodgers, general manager of the restaurant, had left her phone at home Thursday morning. When she went back to get it, she had 30 missed calls. The vice president was on his way to her restaurant.

She jumped in her car and made her way to work, successfully navigating a secret service security cordon. The vice president was inside.

"He was eating some of our local organic eggs and bacon, which I was proud of," she said.

Ms. Friedhof-Rodgers daughter's 12th birthday is Friday and Mr. Biden said he would call her when she gets back from a school camp on Monday.

"He was just so down to earth," said Ms. Friedhof-Rodgers, who is the granddaughter of Harold Ross, who founded the restaurant.

Mr. Biden said he loved traditional diners and Ross' reminded him of the diner owned by the father of his late first wife, Neilia Huner Biden in New York.

The vice president is attending campaign rallies in Muscatine and Fort Dodge today. He began his day by attending Mass at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Davenport, according to a pool report.

President Obama ate at Ross' last year.
