Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and U.S. Rep. James Clyburn, D-S.C., both will attend events in the Quad-Cities on Wednesday, the same day President Barack Obama will speak in Davenport.

Gov.Jindal, considered a rising star in the Republican Party, will speak at the annual Scott County Republican Party Ronald Reagan Dinner that starts at 5 p.m. at the Quad Cities Waterfront Convention Center, 2021 State St., Bettendorf.

Rep. Clyburn will speak in support of Democratic congressional candidate Cheri Bustos at an 8:30 a.m. event organized by the Augustana College Democrats in Carlsson Evald Hall at Augustana College.

Rep. Clyburn, a veteran of the civil rights movement in the South, is assistant Democratic leader in the U.S. House.

Dueling polls
U.S. Rep. Bobby Schilling, R-Colona, and Ms. Bustos, of East Moline, have released polls in recent days that give conflicting snapshots of the 17th District Congressional race.

Last week, Rep. Schilling released a poll of 400 likely voters that gave him a 51-44 percent lead over Ms. Bustos. The poll, conducted Oct. 14-15, had President Obama leading Republican contender Mitt Romney by six points in the new 17th District.

Monday, Ms. Bustos released a poll of 450 likely voters, conducted Oct. 16-18, that gave her a 49-45 percent lead and had President Obama ahead by 12 points.

Peoria Journal Star endorses Schilling
The Peoria Journal Star has endorsed Rep. Schilling. The newspaper knocked Ms. Bustos for her opposition to free trade agreements supported by Rep. Schilling and President Obama.

"The drivers of the district's economy — Caterpillar, John Deere, farm interests — disagree with her, as did a Democratic president," the newspaper's editors wrote.

Long, Albracht and Anderson
Bill Long, Rock Island County Board Republican candidate for District 15, will have a meet and greet at 5 p.m. Wednesday, at Poor Boy's Pizza and Pub, 4121 18th Ave. Rock Island.

Bill Albracht, Republican candidate for state senate, and Neil Anderson, Republican candidate for state representative, will be special guests at the free event.

Grassley for Wozniak
U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, and Rep. Schilling will be special guests at an 8:30 a.m. Thursday breakfast at City Limits, 4519 9th St., Rock Island, for Jim Wozniak, Republican candidate for Rock Island County State's Attorney. Call Paul Kleinhans-Schulz at (319) 596-8021 for details.

Endorsements for Smiddy, Morthland
The Illinois Education Association, the Illinois Fraternal Order of Police, the Associated Firefighters of Illinois and firefighter locals in Moline, East Moline and Rock Island have endorsed Democrat Mike Smiddy.

He's running against State Rep. Rich Morthland, R-Cordova, in District 71. Rep. Morthland has been endorsed by the National Rifle Association, Illinois Family-PAC and the Illinois Federation for Right to Life.
