When & where: Of the 20 sectionals early this week, all but one runs today, and seven hold local interest. The boys' meets involving area schools are at Pekin's Lick Creek (3A), the University of Illinois Orange Course in Champaign (2A), Elgin's Golf Club of Illinois (1A) and Petersburg's Shambolee Golf Course (1A). The girls' meets involving local schools are at Illinois State's Weibring Golf Club in Normal (AA), Genoa's The Oak Club (A) and The Elks in Lincoln (A).
At stake: The top three teams and 10 best-scoring individuals not on a qualifying squad advance to this weekend's 36-hole state meets. Ties are broken via the fifth or sixth card score for team competition, and a sudden-death playoff for individual action. The top seven overall soloists also receive medals.
Local teams: Moline (3A boys, AA girls) and Rockridge (1A boys, A girls) have both teams qualified. Also alive in 1A boys' play are Sherrard, Fulton, Morrison and United. Geneseo, Mercer County and Prophetstown also are in Class A girls' action.
Local individuals (boys): Rock Island's Alec Aunan and Thomas Knuckey qualified in 3A action. Alleman's Dan Cutkomp, Sam Pirmann and Connor Hogan, plus Geneseo's Dugan Kuffel and Billy Converse, are entered in 2A play. The area's 1A contingent includes Riverdale's Jared Richmond, Erie's Koby Kuhnen, Orion's Jason Marshall, Ridgewood's Noah Shannon, Kewanee's Ryan Hansen and Dylan Galloway and Bureau Valley's Ryan Young.
Local individuals (girls): Rock Island's Laurel Enstrom also qualified for Class AA action. The local Class A girls' contingent includes Alleman's Lauren Fout and Claire Benisch, Erie's Skylar Neely-Houzenga, United's Justine Peel, Monmouth-Roseville's Claire McCrery, Kewanee's Paige Dougherty, and Mid-County's Lena Karjala.
Next: The Bloomington-Normal area hosts the boys' state tournaments Friday and Saturday at The Den at Fox Creek (3A), ISU's Weibring Golf Club (2A) and Prairie Vista (1A). Decatur is the home of the girls' state meets Friday and Saturday at Hickory Point (AA) and Red Tail Run (A).
