Geneseo (3-3, 1-1 NIB-12W) at Sterling (4-2, 2-0 NIB-12W) Tonight: The Geneseo Maple Leafs travel to their arch rivals, the Sterling Golden Warriors, for a 7:30 kickoff, following the sophomore game. Why watch: Geneseo's hopes for staying in contention for the Northern Illinois Big 12 West Conference championship hang in the balance. The Leafs loss to Ottawa last week means they'll probably need to win out in conference play and then get some help. ...Sterling is led by QB Tanner Morse who has rushed for 414 yards and 5 TDs. Cornell Hartz is the Warriors' lead tailback, averaging 4.0 yards per carry. ... Sterling has struggled at times this year, losing to Kaneland (42-0) and Rochelle, while also getting tested by LaSalle-Peru and Streator. Last week, it took some big plays to continue the Bulldogs' 24-game losing streak after Streator pulled to within a score. ... The Leafs are carried by QB Luke Snyder who rushed for more than 100 yards against Ottawa, and is the team's second leading rusher behind RB Rayce Singbush. ... The Leafs' three losses have all come to state-ranked teams. The teams that have beat the Leafs have a combined record of 16-2, only losing to each other. Geneseo was in a position to win two of those three, but had to overcome 20-point deficits against both Sycamore and Ottawa.
What they say: "We have to get back on track. We need to come out ready to play right from the beginning instead of waiting until the second and third quarter to get it going." - Geneseo coach Larry Johnsen Jr.
"We've got to tackle better than we have been. As much as you say this is just another game, the kids know it's a big one and they look forward to it." - Sterling coach John Schlemmer
