Dr. Michael Quagliano, 87, of Kewanee, died Tuesday, July 17, 2012, in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Saturday, July 21, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Kewanee, after which military rites will be conducted by the Kewanee Veterans Council. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a rosary at 7:30 p.m at Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee. Burial will be private in East Moline. Memorials may be made to the Visitation School Foundation, 406 W. Central Blvd., Kewanee, IL 61443.

Michael was born Feb. 5, 1925, in Reading, Pa., son of Nicholas and Carmela Venduro Quagliano. He was reared and educated in Kewanee schools, graduating in 1942. Michael served in the Army Air Corp during World War II as a radio operator/gunman on a B-17, completing 25 bombing missions and surviving three crashes. Michael was awarded numerous medals, including the distinguished Flying Cross, and was a member of the famous "Hane's Crew" from which a book was published about the role this crew played in America's success in World War II.

After the war, he graduated from the Illinois School of Podiatry in Chicago and set up his practice in Kewanee, which spanned 60 years. Dr. Quagliano was on the medical staff including Kewanee Public Hospital, president of the Visitation School Board, president of the 490th bomb Group, former president of the Kewanee Rotary Club and numerous other local and national organizations. He married Marilyn McCarthy, an area school teacher, June 26, 1954, in Sterling, who remained his loyal and devoted wife for nearly 60 years and cared for him during the last years of his life.

She survives, as well as three sons, Patrick, New York, N.Y., Michael Drew, Wellington, Fla., Timothy (Shannon), Dubuque, Iowa; and a daughter, Julie (Mark) Westemeier, Arlington, Va.; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a brother, Joseph (Sally) Quagliano, Las Vegas, Nev.; and a sister, Teresa Kapka, Niles, Ill. Dr. Quagliano was preceded in death by a sister, Christina, and a brother, Francie.
