The new Shoppes on 2nd retail incubator in downtown Rock Island is the latest addition to Gallery Hop, which will be from from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday.
A new downtown Rock Island retail incubator is the latest addition to the The District and MidCoast Fine Arts' next Gallery Hop. The free open house, showcasing local artists in 20-plus venues, will take place from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday.

The spaces include art galleries, restaurants, shops and other hot spots in The District, including the Shoppes on 2nd, a renovated building on the corner of 2nd Avenue and 17th Street that was vacant for 10 years. It will house six independent retail suites, ranging in size from 280 to 595 square feet. On Friday, the digital photography of Dixie Kurtz and musical stylings of Retro Ron will be featured there.

Gallery Hop offers a great opportunity to find a one-of-a-kind Mother's Day gift. Jewelry, photography, woodwork, glass, paintings, book signings, sculpture and performance art all will be featured. You can talk with the artists, shop, and watch live demonstrations.

Two Rock Island artists will be featured at Blue Cat Brew Pub. Lance Adrian will present a six-piece Western series and artwork with several other themes. Each of his paintings is designed with a hint of fantasy. Bryan L. Cotton will display his works in ink, pen, paints, colored pencil and charcoal media. Mr. Cotton has displayed works at galleries in Illinois and Iowa and has had exhibitions in several Chicago and Quad-Cities venues.

Other art on display Friday will include:

-- Quad City Arts: 35th annual High School Art Exhibition, featuring the best student work from 12 area high schools. In addition, works from 75 professionals will be offered for sale in the gallery store.

-- The Art Place: Oil paintings by Christina Fait and 15-percent-off framing.

-- DeSoto Arts Center: Live wood-turning demonstrations by Quad City Woodturners, and pottery by Joel Knanishu, Jim Cronk, Amber Williams, Maryan Wherry, Alex Pinc and Eric Wolver.

-- Rozz-Tox: Mixed-media works by Regan Hatfield.

-- MidCoast Gallery West: Mixed-media works by Lisa Mahar and Jamie Hudrlik.

-- The ARTery: Paintings by Allen Holloway.
