Feds take horses from suspected Dixon embezzler
Comment on this story
CHICAGO (AP) — Jewels by Tiffany and Have Faith in Money are among the more than 300 horses seized from the financial officer accused of stealing millions from the city of Dixon. A federal judge on Thursday granted the government's request for forfeiture of the 311 animals, which are now in the care of U.S. marshals. They plan to hire a contractor to manage the horses until they can be sold. Rita Crundwell is accused stealing $53 million from the small city in northern Illinois by siphoning public funds into a secret bank account opened in 1990 while she was Dixon's comptroller. Federal prosecutors contend she used the funds to sustain a lavish lifestyle and her horse breeding operation. She was regarded as one of the best horse breeders in the country.
