Robert L. "Bob" Atkinson, 90, of Port Byron, died Sunday, March 18, 2012, at his home.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 21, 2012, at Gibson Funeral Home, Port Byron. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Port Byron. Memorials may be made to the Port Byron Congregational Church or the Robert Atkinson Memorial Fund.
Robert was born Dec. 17, 1921, in Rock Island, the son of Robert L. and Hazel (Judd) Atkinson. He graduated from Port Byron High School, received a Bachelor of Science from Western Illinois University and a master's in education from Bradley University. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II with the John Deere Battalion. Robert married Barbara Rohwer in Clinton, Iowa, on Dec. 20, 1953. He was an industrial arts teacher for the Moline School District, retiring in 1982. Robert was a member of the Port Byron Congregational Church and the Coe-Lamb American Legion in Port Byron.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara; daughters, Robyn Johnson, Cape Coral, Fla., and Kathryn (Jack) Spiegel, Moline; four grandchildren, Elizabeth (Drew) Cannon, Maryland, Sarah (Michael) Sutherland, Florida, and Caleb and Luke Spiegel, Moline; sister, Arlynn Sallows, Port Byron; and brother, Larry (Zuma) Atkinson, Port Byron.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Melvin Atkinson.
