Western Illinois University President Alvin Goldfarb makes his remarks during the Spring 2008 commencement ceremonies at the i wireless Center in Moline on Sunday.
MOLINE -- Underneath every cap and gown were dreams and aspirations of what a degree could mean for each Western Illinois University Quad Cities graduation candidate.

Behind every potential graduate were loved ones who helped get them there and others who fueled self-determination to become part of the 2008 graduating class.

University president Alvin Goldfarb said it's important for students to pay back those who helped them, including family, friends, the university and the community.

"Be proud of your alma mater and show it through your achievements," he said Sunday at the i wireless Center.

The debt isn't just in student loans. It's for all those who supported every student who becomes a graduate.

The best way to pay back everyone -- especially the mothers present on Mother's Day -- is through volunteering, President Goldfarb said.

"Help those who have fewer advantages than you do," he said.

Besides staying true to the school's core values -- academic excellence, educational opportunity, personal growth and social responsibility -- President Goldfarb told students that switching from student to graduate illustrates one thing that will continue on in their lives change.

Just as the students can expect change, the school will too as the university's Quad City Riverfront Campus continues to gain support and enter the development phase. It will take the campus from 1,200 to 3,000 students, but keep the same purpose as when the first classes were held in the Quad-Cities, Jack Thomas, provost and academic vice president, said.

Mr. Thomas echoed the same statements as President Goldfarb, telling the newly graduated to continue serving their families and communities, no matter where in the world those might be.

"Best wishes on your future endeavors," he said. Graduation candidates of the class of 2008 were:
