  • Richard `Rudi' Sawyers

    Richard "Rudi" Sawyers, 59, of Rock Island, died Sunday, June 17, 2007, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

    A memorial gathering will be held 5-8 p.m. Thursday, June 21, at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly at Jersey Ridge, Davenport. Memorials may be made to the Rock Island County Animal Shelter.

    Rudi was born in Wuerzburg, Germany, to Richard and Yvonne Sawyers. He served with the U.S. Army during Vietnam as a medic and received a Purple Heart.

    In 1981, he graduated with a B.A. from Augustana College and the Quad City Hospital School of Medical Technology. Since 1988 he has worked as a medical technologist with the Metropolitan Laboratories.

    He married Judy Green on Nov. 14, 1992, in Ophiem.

    Rudi was an avid Chicago Cubs and Bears fan. He was a past champion of the Rotor Rulers Rotisserie League, and his other hobbies included bowling, chess, bicycling, tennis and golf.

    Survivors include his wife and friend, Judy Sawyers, and stepson, Chris Thackrey, both of Rock Island; father, Richard Sawyers, and brother, Raymond Sawyers, both of Moline. He was preceded in death by his mother, Yvonne, in 2006.

    Mary Watson

    Mary H. Watson, 73, of Rock Island, died Saturday, June 16, 2007, at St. Anthony's Continuing Care Center in Rock Island.

    Services are 11 a.m. Friday, June 22, at Greater Antioch Baptist Church in Rock Island. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the church. Burial is in Riverside Cemetery in Moline. Memorials may be made to the family.

    She was born Dec. 21, 1933, in Murphysboro, Ill., to C. Waymon and Ezra Kindle Watson.

    She worked as a candy packer at Fresh Pack Candy Company.

    Mary enjoyed fishing, bingo with family, crocheting, gospel music and spending time with her grandchildren.

    Survivors (and spouses) include daughters, Renee (Nate) Sherrod, Rock Island, Nanette (Sylvester) Perry, Milan, Georgette (Milton Porch) Ross, Rock Island; son, Tom Watson, Moline; special godsister, Juanita Wires, Denver, Colo.; goddaughters, Angela Hughes, Columbia, Mo., Conswayda Merritt, Hannibal, Mo.; nine grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; three nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister.

    Patricia Martin

    Patricia A. Martin, 65, formerly of Moline, beloved wife and mother, died residing in Colorado Springs, Colo., on June 16, 2007, after a long and courageous battle with ovarian cancer.

    A funeral mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday, June 22, at DeRoo Funeral Home, Moline, and 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, Moline. Visitation is from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home with a Christian wake service at 3 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region, 610 Abbott Lane, Colorado Springs, CO 80905.

    The former Patricia A. Sandmark was born Oct. 29, 1941, in Moline, the daughter of Alvin L. and Hazel K. Sandmark.

    Patricia was employed by Dr. Ericco and Dr. Murrell before working at Deere and Company, where she met her husband, John L. Martin, originally from Aledo, before staying at home to care for her family.

    An avid animal and bird lover, Patricia also enjoyed gardening, cooking and traveling. Patricia moved to Colorado Springs in 1988 to enjoy retirement with her husband.

    Patricia leaves behind her husband of 39 years, John L. Martin; her daughter, Christine Martin Paetsch and son-in-law, Siegmund Paetsch; stepdaughters, Diane, and Cindy (husband, Michael) Martin; grandchildren, Nicholas and Chloe Paetsch; and stepgranddaughter, Sarah Martin. She was preceded in death by her parents and half-brothers, Michael Arms and Richard Sandmark.

    Thomas Lanier

    Thomas R. Lanier, 60, East Moline, died Sunday, June 17, 2007, at Genesis Medical Center, Illini Campus, Silvis.

    A memorial visitation is 2-4 p.m. Saturday at Van Hoe Funeral Home, East Moline. At Tom's request his body has been cremated and private inurnment is in National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Memorials may be made to the All Animal Humane Society, Milan, or to the Quad-City Greyhound Adoption program.

    Tom was born Jan. 30, 1947, in Miami, Fla., the son of William and Jean Lanier.

    Mr. Lanier received a bachelor's in engineering from the University of Southern Florida. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was a decorated veteran of the Vietnam era. Tom had worked in management for many companies throughout the U.S. and most recently as general manager at CharNor, Milan, for the past two years.

    Survivors include daughters, Barbara Lanier, Thousand Oaks, Calif., and Tawnia Foye, Simi Valley, Calif.; three grandchildren; and his fiancee, Penny Schierling, East Moline.

    Robert Mayfield

    Robert L. Mayfield, 66, of Milan, died Monday, June 18, 2007, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

    Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Bewley Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Aledo. There is no visitation. Burial will be in the New Boston Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Robert Mayfield Memorial Fund.

    Bob was born Jan. 13, 1941, in Chicago, the son of Mabel Mayfield. He married Martha Jane Lilly Aug. 12, 1978, in Viola. She died Sept. 15, 2004.

    Bob was a retired trucker for the Pinnacle Stanrick Corp. in Rock Island. He enjoyed classic cars.

    Survivors include his children, Cory Allen, Andrew Scott and Emily Christine Mayfield, all at home. He was preceded in death by his mother and wife, Janey.

    Lois Adams

    Lois L. Adams, 81, of Joy, died Sunday, June 17, 2007, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

    Per her wishes, there are no services. Bewley Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Aledo, assisted the family.

    Lois was born July 27, 1925, in Mannon, Ill., the daughter of George Diehl and Mary Scott Diehl. She married Ira Adams on Sept. 19, 1946, in Aledo.

    She loved to make quilts, do needlework and gardening. Lois was employed by the former Glove Factory and Fortner Nursing Home, both in Aledo. She farmed with her husband, Ira, from 1946 to 1975.

    Survivors (and spouses) include her husband of 60 years, Ira; son, Gary Ira Adams, New Boston; daughter, Elaine (Cliff) Anderson, Joy; grandson, Cliff (Jennifer) Anderson Jr., Alexis; granddaughter, Mary Adams, Sherrard, and friend, Mark Slusser; great-granddaughter, Kira Nicole Anderson, Alexis; brother, Elmo (Ella Marie) Diehl, Aledo; sisters-in-law, Nora Diehl and Jean Diehl, both of Aledo, Juanita Miller, Muscatine, Iowa; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Rex and Cheryl McIntire, Keithsburg. She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Maynard, Glenn, Ivan, Earl and Kenneth; and two sisters, Grace and Margie.

    Lyle Gehlsen

    Lyle K. Gehlsen, 92, of Resthave Nursing Home, Morrison, died Monday, June 18, 2007, at the nursing home.

    A memorial service is 10:30 a.m. Friday at Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home, Morrison. There is no visitation. Interment is in Grove Hill Cemetery, Morrison.

    He was born April 16, 1915. He married Ellen Irion Feb. 11, 1936, in Morrison. She died May 9, 1996.

    Surviving are daughters, Joyce Goodenough, Morrison, Jeanne Weiman, Peoria; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sister, Sarah Johnston, Springfield, Ill.

    Felipe Morales

    Felipe Morales, 23, of Marion, Iowa, formerly of the Quad-Cities, died Sunday, June 17, 2007, at St. Lukes Methodist Hospital, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

    Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday, June 21, at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Moline, where further arrangements are pending.

    Lawrence Robbins

    Lawrence W. Robbins, 85, Kewanee, died March 13, 2007, at the Mesa Hospice, Mesa, Ariz.

    Cremation rites were accorded. Memorial services are 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Kewanee. Visitation is following services. Private inurnment will be in Evergreen Memorial Gardens, rural Kewanee. Arrangements are by Schueneman-Tumbleson, Kewanee.

    He was born June 11, 1922, in Kewanee, to John and Mary Jackson Robbins. He married Shirley DeWolf Oct. 11, 1953, in Kewanee.

    Surviving are his wife; son, Gary, assigned to Iraq; two granddaughters; nieces and nephews.

    Russell VanAntwerp

    Russell J. VanAntwerp, 54, of Atkinson, died Monday, June 18, 2007, at the scene of an auto accident, Interstate 80 mile marker 32, Annawan, while traveling to work.

    A Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Atkinson. Monsignor Don Fitzpatrick and Deacon Nick Simon will celebrate. Burial will be in the St. Anthony's Cemetery, Atkinson. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Vandemore Funeral Home, Atkinson, where the rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials to the Russell J. VanAntwerp Memorial Fund.

    Russ was born on May 7, 1953, in Geneseo, the son of Arlo "Dutch" and Shirley Clementz VanAntwerp. He was united in marriage to Sharon Lauwagie on Sept. 9, 1978, in Atkinson. Russ was a 1971 graduate of the Atkinson High School.

    He was currently employed by J.F. Edwards Construction Co. in Geneseo as an electrical foreman for 21 years.

    He was a member of the St. Anthony's Catholic Church, and Local 145.

    He was an avid boater and enjoyed hunting, gardening, woodworking, and popcorn and movies. Russ especially enjoyed weekend coffee breaks with his wife, long distance phone calls with his sweet daughter, and archery with his son. His greatest love and joy was his family and spending time with them.

    Survivors include his wife, Sharon; one daughter and spouse, Kelsey and Duane Smith, Oak Lawn, Ill.; one son, Kale VanAntwerp, Atkinson; his mother, Shirley VanAntwerp, Atkinson; his father, Arlo "Dutch" VanAntwerp, Atkinson; two brothers and spouse, Tim and Lynda VanAntwerp, Kewanee, Tony VanAntwerp, Atkinson; one sister and spouse, Rhonda and Randy Vandersnick, Towanda, Ill.; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Cyriel and Ruth Lauwagie, Atkinson; sister-in-law and brothers-in-law, Arlene and Al DeSplinter, Atkinson, Diane and John Cessna, Galesburg; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandparents and one brother, Terry VanAntwerp.

    Anita VandeVoorde

    Anita VandeVoorde, 75, of Annawan, passed away Sunday, June 17, 2007, at Hillcrest Nursing Home, Geneseo.

    A Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Annawan. The Rev. Timothy Sauppe will celebrate. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Annawan. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Vandemore Funeral Homes, Atkinson, where a rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m. Memorials may be left for Masses or the Annawan Rescue Unit.

    Anita was born on Sept. 21, 1931, in Kewanee, the daughter of Leonard and Anna Goffrier Johnson. She was a 1949 graduate of Kewanee High School where she was valedictorian and majorette of their marching band.

    Anita was united in marriage to Ralph "Toby" VandeVoorde on April 21, 1956, in Kewanee.

    She enjoyed playing cards, fishing, traveling, bingo and creating ceramics.

    Survivors (and spouses) include her husband, Ralph "Toby"; one daughter, Jane (James) VandeVoorde-Otting, Los Angeles, Calif.; one son, Michael (Susan) VandeVoorde, Austin, Texas; one sister, Norita (Stanley) Pont, Surprise, Ariz.; two brothers, William (Doris) Johnson, Renton, Wash., Herbert (JoAnn) Johnson, Parks, Ariz. She was preceded in death by her parents.

    Bernard `Bernie' Curran

    Funeral services and a Mass of Christian burial for Bernard J. "Bernie" Curran, DVM, 58, a resident of Park View, will take place at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 21, at St. Ann's Catholic Church, Long Grove. Burial will be in St. Ann's Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the church where a prayer service will be offered at 7:30 p.m.

    Bernie died Monday, June 18, 2007, at his home after an extended illness. Memorials may be made to Gilda's Club of the Quad Cities or American Association of Swine Veterinarians (AASV) Scholarship Foundation. Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport, is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.

    Bernard James Curran was born Aug. 29, 1948, in Davenport, but was raised in Aledo, the son of John and Lucille Ryan Curran. He was united in marriage to Mary Ann Meyer, Sept. 5, 1970, in Bancroft, Iowa.

    Bernie was a 1970 graduate of St. Ambrose College and then attended Iowa State University where he graduated in 1974 from the College of Veterinary Medicine. Bernie was a founder and partner of Scott County Animal Hospital in Eldridge.

    He was an active member of St. Ann's Catholic Church and numerous professional organizations.

    Bernie loved to work. His colleagues and clients were daily partners and some of his closest friends. He loved to fish and play golf, to work in his gardens, and at the end of the day to sit on his deck with the wind at his back. But above all he loved his family -- his wife, his three boys, his grandsons. Spending time with them was his greatest joy.

    Survivors (and spouses) include his wife, Mary Ann; and their three sons, Chris (Sheri) Curran, Moline, Michael Curran, Rapid City, S.D., Jeff Curran, Park View; two grandsons, Benjamin and Ryan; his parents, John and Lucille Curran, Fort Wayne, Ind.; two sisters, Mary Pat (Dave) Nichols, and Margaret (Bruce) Karr, all of Fort Wayne; two brothers, John Curran, St. Paul, Minn., and Dan (Fran) Curran, Bettendorf; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. His grandparents preceded him in death.

    Sandra Mumm

    Sandra L. Mumm, 62, of Davenport, died June 18, 2007, at the University of Iowa Hospitals, Iowa City.

    Services are 10 a.m. Thursday, at Weerts, Davenport. Burial is in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation is 4 to 7 p.m. today.

    She married Wayne A. Mumm Feb. 22, 1964.

    Surviving are husband, Wayne; children, Laurie Bledsoe, Tammy Mumm, Michael, all Davenport, Jeffrey, Omaha, Neb.; seven grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; sister, Diana Walker, Davenport; four brothers including, Kerry Wallerich, Rock Island, and David Wallerich, Davenport.

    Michael Pittman

    Pfc. Michael P. Pittman, 34, formerly of Davenport, was killed in action on Friday, June 15, 2007, in Baghdad, Iraq.

    Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at 1st Assembly of God Church, Bettendorf. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf, where further arrangements are pending.

    Naomi Rose

    Naomi E. Rose, 88, Blue Grass, died Monday, June 18, 2007, at Genesis West, Davenport.

    Following cremation, memorial services are 2 p.m. Thursday at Runge, Davenport. There is no visitation. Private burial is in Blue Grass Cemetery at a later time.

    She was born Feb. 1, 1919, to Gustave and Ruby Schroeder. On Jan. 14, 1976, she married Birt Rose. He died in 1999.

    Surviving are children, Ronald Morrison, Blue Grass, Jerry Morrison, Peggy Stineman, Donna Wiese, all Davenport, David Stoffers, Walcott; 14 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.
