    David Owen Archer, 53, of Rock Island, died Tuesday, July 11, 2006, at his residence.

    There will be no services or visitation. Private family burial will be in National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island is assisting the family with arrangements.

    Mr. Archer was born Jan. 2, 1953, in Bridgeton, N.J., son of James and Margaret Burke Archer.

    His love for his family will live on forever. A lifetime of memories will be cherished by his many friends and family. Dave had a special place in all of our hearts. His songs, stories and gift of love will remain with us always. "Black Birds" will sing in our hearts forever.

    Maxine Jones Hinson

    Maxine Jones Hinson, 86, of Whiteville, N.C., died Thursday, July 6, 2006, at Liberty Commons Nursing Facility, Whiteville.

    Final rites were held on Monday, July 10, at McKenzie Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Erron Hubbel officiating. Burial followed in Whiteville Memorial Cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary of Whiteville handled arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association-Eastern North Carolina Chapter, 400 Oberlin Road, Suite 200, Raleigh, N.C. 27605.

    Mrs. Hinson was born July 2, 1920, in Beardstown, Ill., a daughter of Anthony Alonzo and Esther Hoelscher Jones. She was a graduate of the Rock Island High School class of 1938, a prolific artist and skilled genealogical researcher. She loved her family and was a charter member of Peace Baptist Church in Whiteville.

    Survivors include four sons, John Hinson and wife, Jeanine, Key Biscayne, Fla., Sam Hinson and wife, Meg, Chadbourn, N.C., Donald Hinson and wife, Margaret, Whiteville, Matt Hinson and wife, Beverly, Wilmington, N.C.; three daughters, Patricia Edelkind and husband, Steve, Atlanta, Ga., Molly Seibel and husband, Fred, New York City, N.Y., Rebecca Hinson, Lake Worth, Fla.; one sister, Lucile McMurl, Moline; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, L.A. Hinson; a son, Steve Hinson; a sister, Beatrice Wynes; a brother, Bill Jones; and grandson, Eric Silva.

    Richard Smith

    Richard W. Smith, 44, of Albuquerque, N.M., formerly of the Illinois Quad-Cities, died on Friday, July 7, 2006, at University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque as a result of an automobile accident on June 18, 2006.

    Services will be 11 a.m. Friday, July 14, at Wendt Funeral Home, Moline. Following the services, a luncheon will be held at New Life Fellowship Church, Moline. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m. today. Burial will be in National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Memorials may be made to the family for an educational fund for his children.

    Richard was born Dec. 15, 1961, in Rock Island to Harry and Martha Nolan Smith. He married Christine Johnson Hahn on April 25, 1986. He later married Jennifer Shaffer Cattanach on May 6, 2000.

    Richard served in the Navy. He was employed at Kirkland AFB Commissary in Albuquerque and was also an airplane detailer employed by Southwest Airlines. He enjoyed playing the guitar, loved flying and was working on his pilot's license.

    Survivors include his father, Harry Smith, Dixon, Ill.; two daughters, Abigail Smith, Greenville, Wis., Autumn Smith, Edgewood, N.M.; one son, Bryce Smith, Greenville; one stepdaughter, Jennifer Jensen, Colona; one stepson, Michael Hillman, Phoenix, Ariz.; two granddaughters, Frances Jensen and Madeline Hillman; three sisters, Terri (husband, David) Henley, Moline, Christine (husband, Richard) Rosenbaum, Rock Island, Lindsay Smith, Rock Island; one brother, Kenneth Smith, Moline; two nephews, Joseph and Jacob; one niece, Jessica. He was preceded in death by his mother; his maternal grandparents, Kenneth and Agnes Nolan; and one son, Nolan Smith.

    James Kutsch

    James R. Kutsch, 64, of Moline, died Tuesday, July 11, 2006, at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island.

    Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. Friday, July 14, at DeRoo Funeral Home, Moline, and noon at Sacred Heart Church, Moline, where he was a member.     James R. Kutsch was born July 17, 1941, in Dubuque, son of George and Eleanor Gorman Kutsch. He married the former Connie Dunne in Dubuque on Feb. 28, 1976. She preceded him in death in 1987.

    James was employed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as a logistics coordinator, retiring in 2000. He was a veteran of the Air Force, serving during the Vietnam War.

    Ruth Schwarz

    Ruth Schwarz, 82, of Moline, died July 11, 2006, at Davenport Lutheran Home.

    Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. John's Lutheran Church, East Moline. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Visitation is 3 to 7 p.m. today in the Celebration of Life Chapel at Trimble Funeral and Cremation Center, Moline. Memorials may be given to St. John's Lutheran Church, Fort Wayne Seminary or the German American Heritage Center.

    The former Ruth Bernadine Ball was born Aug. 16, 1923, in Wilton, Iowa, daughter of Bernhardt and Alvina Utesch Ball. She married Calvin Ray Schwarz March 2, 1945, in Wilton. He preceded her in death June 26, 2002.

    Ruth was employed at the Kmart in Moline for 19 years. During World War II, she was employed at the Tank Arsenal in Bettendorf.

    Ruth was a member of St John's Lutheran Church in East Moline, where she was active in the choir, the birthday club, the ladies aid and the 60 plus club. She was a member of the American Schleswig-Holstein Heritage Society and a charter member of the Friendship Force of the Quad Cities, having traveled extensively throughout the world.

    Ruth loved jigsaw puzzles, history and genealogy, and enjoyed cooking, quilting and handicrafts.

    Ruth is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Yvonne and Johnny Tingle, Rock Island, Paula and David Pratt, Moline; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sister, Elnora Whitmer, Muscatine, Iowa; four bothers, Carl Ball, Ridge Manor, Fla., Elmer Ball, Wilton, Allan Ball, Muscatine, and Richard Ball, Norfolk, Va. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Ellen Faye Schwarz and Diana Johnson; two sons, Dwayne Schwarz and Bernard Schwarz; a grandson, Randall Schwarz; a sister, Frances Ball; and a brother, Harvey Ball.

    Lucille K. Wright, 87, of Moline, died Monday, July 10, 2006, at her residence.

    Lucille K. Wright was born July 25, 1918, in Sigourney, daughter of John and Catherine Dawson Wright.

    Lucille was a Sister of Humility while teaching many years at the former Marycrest College, Davenport, and in Great Falls, Mont. She then taught for many years at Lincoln-Irving Elementary School, Moline, from which she retired.

    Lucille was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church, Moline. She was an avid bridge player and had given bridge lessons.

    Survivors include sisters, Ethel Bender, Waukesha, Wis., and Winifred Wright, Venice, Fla., many nieces and nephews, cousins and numerous friends.

    Dale Anderson

    Dale A. Anderson, 69, of Galva, died Tuesday, July 11, 2006, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City.

    Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 15, at Rux Funeral Home, Galva. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 14, at the funeral home. Military rites will be accorded at the funeral home by the Galva Fusiliers. Cremation rites will be accorded following the service, and inurnment will be in Galva Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be directed to Grace Methodist Church, Galva.

    Mr. Anderson was born Jan. 13, 1937, in Waukegan, Ill., son of Arthur "Chink" and Marjorie Flynn Anderson. He was married to Shirley Doxsee in 1956, Peg Larrington and Ruth Plym McCue on Oct. 7, 1994. She survives in Kewanee.

    Mr. Anderson served his country in the U.S. Air Force. He had worked at various foundries in Galva, the Galva Foundry, Alton Box Co. of Galesburg, as a welder for Rock Island Bridge & Iron Work, as a barber in Rockford, as a custodian at a hospital in California and as a production supervisor at Lucky stores for 10 years until his retirement.

    He attended Grace Methodist Church in Galva. He enjoyed traveling, golf, playing rummy and going to casinos. He was a hat collector with more than 500 in his collection and a lover of his John Deere riding lawn mower.

    Survivors (and spouses) include his wife; one daughter, Melissa "Missy" (Brian) Smith, Rock Island; one son and three daughters by his second marriage; a stepson, Jeff (Debbie) McCue, Wataga, Ill.; two stepdaughters, Annette (Tim) McClay, East Galesburg, Ill., and Amy (Mike) Walters, Smithfield, Va.; two grandchildren, Marty Matherly, Rock Island, Michael Matherly, Normal, Ill.; eight grandchildren by his second marriage; eight stepgrandchildren; one great-grandson, Kyle Matherly; five great-grandchildren by his second marriage; 10 stepgreat-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Barb Hopkins, Galva; a half-brother, John Kolvan, a half-sister, Doris Bakos, Racine, Wis. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

    William Harbarger

    William "Bill" E. Harbarger, 75, of Reynolds, passed away Tuesday, July 11, 2006, at his home after a courageous battle with cancer.

    Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 13, at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home, Milan. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 14, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Reynolds Cemetery immediately following the service. Memorials may be made to the Rock Island County Humane Society.

    The son of William Earl and Vera Cramer Harbarger, Bill was born Aug. 25, 1930, in Rock Island. He married the former Lila L. Schroeder Feb. 19, 1949, in Rock Island.

    Bill was a self-employed contractor for many years. He later worked at Augustana College in the structural department and retired in 1992. Bill enjoyed boating and was a past member of the Rock Island Coast Guard Auxiliary.

    He was a master carpenter and craftsman and also loved spending time with his family and his beloved dog, Cindy.

    Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Lila; daughters and spouses, Gail Kohlmeier, Waterloo, Ill., Jeanne and Stephen Carlson, Reynolds, Vicki and Mark Allen, Reynolds, Susan and Shawn Meguffy, Reynolds; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Betty Grandbouche, New Orleans, La. Bill was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Marjorie Little.

    She was born May 6, 1953, in Galesburg to Melvin and Marian Plunkett Snyder. She graduated from Winola High School and never married.

    She cared for her mother until her passing in 1986 and moved to Galesburg, where she was employed at Marigold Health Care Center and Rosewood Care Center. She received her CNA and did home health care in the area until retiring in 2001 because of illness.

    Rita was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church, New Windsor, and former member of the North Henderson Home Extension.

    She enjoyed cross-stitch and shopping and especially enjoyed her nieces and nephew.

    Survivors include her father, Melvin Snyder, Marigold Health Care Center, Galesburg; brother, Alan Snyder and special friend Mary Schneckloth, Viola; a sister-in-law, Dawn Snyder, Warrenville, Ill.; nieces, Erin and Whitney Snyder, Naperville, Ill.; nephew, Grant Snyder, Iowa City; several aunts, uncles and cousins.     Scott Eric Wildemuth, 46, of Euless, Texas, died Tuesday, May 16, 2006, in Grapevine, Texas.

    A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, July 15, at Fairview United Methodist Church, Annawan. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Geneseo. Bluebonnet Hill Funeral Home, Colleyville, Texas, handled the cremation and services in Texas.

    He was born Aug. 11, 1959, in Taylorville, Ill., son of Robert and Inez Marston Wildemuth. He married Wanda Yanello.

    LeRoy Edwin Engler, 73, of Eldridge, died Wednesday, July 12, 2006, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City.

    He was born Feb. 8, 1933, in rural Donahue to Ulrich and Tena Glunz Engler.

    Jennie Kapalis

    Jennie Kapalis, 91, a resident of Davenport, died Wednesday, July 12, 2006, at Jersey Ridge Place, Davenport.

    Her funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 15, at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, Rock Island, where she was a member. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf, where a prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Memorials may be made to St. George Greek Orthodox Church or the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Iowa, 3838 70th St., Suite 101, Urbandale, Iowa, 50322.

    She was born Sept. 24, 1914, in East Moline, daughter of Peter and Alexandra Triandafilakis Chickris. On April 23, 1950, Jennie married John Kapalis in East Moline. He preceded her in death in 1996.

    Jennie worked at Tri-City Food Store in Silvis. She was a tireless volunteer in many school, church and other community organizations.

    Her interests and activities included caring for her garden and doing needlepoint. Her beloved family, especially her grandchildren, were the joy of her life and she treasured every minute they could be together.

    Those left to honor her memory include her daughter, Alexis Allen, Bettendorf; her son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Diane Kapalis, Bettendorf; her grandchildren, Matthew Kapalis, Bettendorf, and Kristin Allen, Bettendorf; and her sisters and brother-in-law, Theresa Chickris and Bess and Bill Dell, all of East Moline. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, George, Michael and Chris Chickris; her sister, Sue Chickris; and her parents.

    Sidney Arthur Pelo, of Bettendorf, left this world peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Tuesday, July 11, 2006, at the age of 87.

    Honorary pallbearers are Dan Pelo, Scott Rocker, Zach Rocker, John Haigh, Marty Guilfoyle, Mike Walker, Brian Kilstrom, Scott Gillies and Patrick Gerst.

    Sidney was born Nov. 4, 1918, in Pleasant Valley, Iowa, to Arthur and Anna Pelo. Sid graduated from Davenport High School in 1937. He married his wife, Arline R. Lamp, on Dec. 15, 1946.

    Sid was the first walking route carrier for the city of Bettendorf. He transferred to the Rock Island Post Office to work in customer service. He retired in 1975 after 37 years with the Postal Service. Sid worked several part-time jobs during this time, such as Sid's Cleaners with his wife, Arline, Plaza Bowl as a bartender, and assisted at Iowana Dairy Farms.

    Sid enjoyed many outdoor activities. He was an original member of the Thuenen Oilers softball team. He loved gardening and always looked forward to the annual Big Tomato contest held at Knights Inn in Bettendorf. He was an avid fisherman and bowler and loved to play cards with his family and friends.

    Sid spent much time in Necedah, Wis., as a child and passed on much of his fishing and camping knowledge to his children and grandchildren. He especially enjoyed traveling to Florida with his wife, Arline, in their RV, ("The Unit") to Holiday Cove in Bradenton, where they would vacation in the winter months. Sid enjoyed the friendships he made with other vacationers from around the country.

    Sid is survived by his wife, Arline; brother, Gordy Pelo, LeClaire; sons, Dan Pelo, Bettendorf, and Scott Rocker (wife, Joyce), Pleasant Valley; daughters, Debra Guilfoyle and Diane Haigh, Bettendorf; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Anna Pelo.
