Alan Carmen beat Glen Evans in Tuesday's Democratic primary for supervisor in Rock Island Township.

Mr. Carmen now will run unopposed in the April 9 general election after beating Mr. Evans by 383 votes to 129.

There also was a primary for Rock Island Township trustees Tuesday, with six Democrats competing for four slots.

Incumbents Vincent Thomas, James Kerr and Heather Gray all won. But incumbent Matthew Parker was not elected, missing out to challenger Rita Kirk. Challenger Ruben Aguilar received the fewest votes.

The winners move unopposed to the April 9 general election.

There was no love lost between Mr. Evans and Mr. Carmen in the supervisor primary. Both declined to talk about their opponent after the election.

During the campaign, Mr. Evans said Mr. Carmen should be unsuitable for the supervisor's position because his wife, Brenda, is the township's assessor.

Mr. Carmen said his election would not create a conflict of interest as the two offices are independent.

After winning Tuesday's primary, Mr. Carmen said he was looking forward to being sworn-in on May 20. The retired Rock Island city official said his reputation helped him win.

As supervisor, he said he hopes to prove the "worth and value" of the township.

Mr. Evans said he was disappointed the hard work he put into the election did not pay off.

"I do want to thank all of the people that supported me," he said.

Turnout across primaries in Rock Island, Silvis and South Moline on Tuesday only was 2.9 percent, with 994 ballots cast out of 33,632 eligible registered voters.
