A Scott County District Court jury on Monday found Keith Meyer innocent of a misdemeanor count of assault while displaying a weapon.

The jury of six men and six women began deliberations Friday evening and picked up Monday morning, submitting their ruling Monday afternoon. Their decision came after a week-long trial in Scott County District Court.

Mr. Meyer, 71, of Davenport, a former city alderman, represented himself throughout the proceedings.

The charge against Mr. Meyer culminated a long feud with his neighbor, John Fahs, over a shared driveway.

Mr. Fahs, a rental property owner, allowed tenants to park on Mr. Meyer's land and regularly dumped garbage near the start of their jointly owned driveway, Mr. Meyer said.

"I tried," Mr.Meyers said, claiming repeated complaints he submitted to the city and police departments were not taken seriously and dismissed.
 
On Nov. 11,  Mr. Meyer was accused of taking a shotgun from his home and displaying it in a threatening manner towards Mr. Fahs.

"It's one of those guns you don't know what to do with," he said, adding there was no evidence he had raised the gun at his neighbor. A picture taken by Mr. Fahs at the time of the incident showed Mr. Meyer holding the firearm at his side.

During the trial, Mr. Fahs testified he had felt like a "deer in headlights" during the incident and was frightened for his life.

In his closing statement Friday, Assistant Scott County Attorney Will Ripley said it did not matter whether Mr. Meyer had pointed the gun or not; to be found guilty, there only needed to be proof that he displayed the gun and that the alleged victim was fearful.
