Lady Rocks still seek WB6 perfection
|
Going into the penultimate week of the Western Big 6 girls basketball season, there aren't too many unanswered questions. The biggest storylines in the final two weeks of the season are 1) whether or not Rock Island will win the title outright, 2) how much can the Pioneers get out of Zoe Kelso and will that change the regional and 3) whether or not any of the 4A teams have enough firepower to win a regional. Last week, Rock Island moved to 8-0 in the Big 6, defeating Galesburg. The Rocks have two of the bottom three teams in the league left on the schedule. Here is a look at tonight's action: Moline (8-18, 2-6 WB6) at Rock Island (23-3, 8-0 WB6): The Rocks have a chance to win the Western Big 6 conference title outright tonight on their home court. It's hard to imagine it going any other way. The Rocks are one of the top teams in the state in 4A, and Moline has been reeling. Saturday, the Maroons did get their first win of 2013 over Rockford Boylan, but it'll take an enormous effort and Rocky playing poorly for this one to be much of a game. Quincy (11-10, 2-6 WB6) at Alleman (14-13, 1-7 WB6): With the return of Zoe Kelso, albeit in a limited role, the Pioneers looked like a new team on Tuesday. If they can carry that over to Thursday, expect the Pioneers to move back into a three-way tie in the bottom half of the conference. United Township (16-11, 6-2 WB6) at Galesburg (17-10, 5-3 WB6): The Panthers and Streaks are playing for pride, and the Panther girls have said any win against Galesburg is a big one. The Streaks have been streaky this year, struggling at times to score, and if the Panthers can continue to play the kind of defense that has put them near the top of the Big 6, the standings could be all a moot point in the league's final week. 1988 -- 25 years ago: Willis Kuschmann, of Moline, who already has won his laurels as oneof the most artistic men in the Quad-Cities area, has a new hobby. He is deeply involvedin miniature railroading. At the age of 88, when many other seniors are dozing in theirchairs or sitting before the television, Mr. Kuschmann is planning and working on hiscollection.
