Two men accused of breaking into a Moline home in the 3500 block of 12th Street Court Wednesday made their initial appearances in Rock Island County Circuit Court Thursday, each facing a felony count of residential burglary.
Angel Luis Madera-Martinez, 29, and Marangeli Ortiz, 26, both of Houston, Texas, sat side-by-side in the jail courtroom Thursday, wearing orange jumpsuits and clutching their hands in their laps above shackled ankles.A Spanish interpreter translated the hearing for the men, neither of whom appeared to speak much English.
They each were appointed a public defender and had preliminary hearings scheduled for Tuesday.
Police arrested the pair Wednesday afternoon shortly after a home invasion. Moline police said that, at about 1 p.m., they were notified a white SUV had pulled up outside a Moline home; two men got out and broke several glass panes in the front door to gain entrance to the residence. Responding officers reported seeingtwo men run from the house to nearby woods while thedriver of the SUV left the scene.
Police have not confirmed if anything was taken and no additional arrests have been made, Detective Scott Williams said Thursday.
Mr. Madera-Martinez and Mr. Ortiz remained in Rock Island County Jail Thursday on $100,000 bonds. If released, they have been court-ordered to have no contact with the residence.
A second break-in occurred about an hour earlier in Milan. According to the sheriff's department, two masked men, armed with a gun, allegedly entered a home in the 2800 block of 54th Avenue West at 11:42 a.m. Wednesday and took three firearms before fleeing.
The home's sole resident was not injured, and no arrests have been made, according to Rock Island County Sheriff Jeff Boyd. He added he did not think the two crimes were related.
In a Thursday email, Detective Williams wrote that Moline police are working with other police departments "to see if our suspects are responsible for their burglaries."
