King Center Hosts Service to Honor Dr. King and Community Members

The Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center is delighted to invite the community to the Annual Memorial Service and Awards celebration honoring the late Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, January 21, 2013 from 9 am to 10:30 am, located at 630 Ninth Street in Rock Island.

The event marks 30 years at the King Center, with 500 people anticipated to attend the event, we are excited to debut this event as 2013 marks also the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington. We are preparing for an empowering day of reflection as we celebrate the legacy of the Dr. King, while recommitting to love, justice, peace, and service, all of which were principles that Dr. King espoused and utilized to change the world we live in today," remarked Reverend Dwight Ford, Executive Director of the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center.

This year's theme for the event is "There's still work to be done." Reverend Lance Chaney, formerly of Greater Antioch Baptist Church in Rock Island, and now serves as Senior Pastor at St. John Baptist Church in Boynton Beach, Florida will give the keynote. In addition, the program will include a variety of performances and presentations to honor Dr. King.

One of the biggest honors of the day is to award community members including:
• Youth Essay Awards – several elementary and junior high youth will read their essays
• Tia-Farrah Rice Youth Award – awarded to a youth for volunteer service
• Black Hawk College Scholarship – two year scholarship awarded to a Rock Island High School student
• "I Have A Dream Award" – awarded to a Rock Island citizen for community service

The mission of the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center is to provide opportunities for a diverse population through a variety of programs and services. The first celebration will be the Memorial Dayprogram at 10 a.m. May 30, at the Brettun and Black Store Museum on River Road. Therewill be a sesquicentennial display.
