December Meeting 2012-- Rock Island Arsenal Historical Society


The Rock Island Arsenal Historical Society will have its monthly meeting at 6:00 PM on Thursday, December 6th, Veranda Room of the Arsenal Golf Club, 1838 Gillespie Street, Rock Island Arsenal. The menu for will be Filet of Salmon with Cucumber and Tomato, Coleslaw, Rice Pilaf and Green Bean Almandine and Dessert prepared by the Golf Club Chef, all for $14.00, including tax and tip. This event is open to both members and non-members. Interested parties may choose to attend only the Program Portion of the meeting at 7:00 PM at no cost. Guest speaker will Kathy Carey from the National Society Daughters of the Revolution (NSDAR). Her topic is "D.A.R. –Let's Take a Look." Please have a valid picture ID handy when coming onto the Island and tell the guard at the gate you plan to attend a function at the Golf Club. Remember, those coming across the Government Bridge from Iowa after 5:30 PM now need to proceed to the Rock Island Gate because the Davenport Gate will be closed. Also, regardless of the time of day, all southbound (Illinois bound) traffic crossing the Government Bridge is now required to stop at the intersection with the Davenport Gate.

1889 -- 125 years ago: Lighting struck wires of the Merchants Electric Light Co. during a furious storm, and many Rock Island business houses were compelled to resort to gas as a means of illumination.

1989 -- 25 years ago: The Quad-Cities has what is believed to be the area's first elite-class gymnast. It's the stuff upon which Olympic competitors are made. Tiffany Chapman, of Rock Island, not only has earned the highest possible gymnast ranking, she won the honor at age 11.
