A former Davenport alderman, accused of threatening his neighbor with a gun on Sunday, made an initial appearance in Scott County Circuit Court Tuesday on a misdemeanor charge of assault while displaying a weapon.
Keith Edwin Meyer, 71, of 1010 N. Marquette St., remains out on bond and is scheduled for a Nov. 26 preliminary hearing.
Davenport police were dispatched to the former 3rd Ward alderman's house about 11:30 a.m. Sunday after a neighbor complained Mr. Meyer had threatened him with a firearm, according to an affidavit filed by Officer Randall Gard.
At the scene, the neighbor said told police that when he pulled into his driveway earlier that morning, Mr. Meyer began swearing and threatening him.
According to the affidavit, the neighbor said he ignored Mr. Meyer, but when he came out later to retrieve the morning paper and take pictures of a speed bump being built in the joint driveway, he saw Mr. Meyer coming towards him with a gun.
The neighbor said Mr. Meyers told him, "I got my shotgun and I'm going to use it," and pointed it at him, the affidavit states.
The neighbor said he quickly snapped a picture of Mr. Meyer pointing the gun before fleeing inside to call 911. He told police Mr. Meyer had threatened him in the past, but Sunday was the first time he displayed a weapon.
Mr. Meyer later told police he felt "threatened" when his neighbor pulled into the driveway, so retrieved a shotgun to "defend himself," according to the affidavit.
