Western Illinois University is reporting a dip of overall enrollment for the fall semester, although numbers for its Quad-Cities' campuses showed a slight increase.
An initial count of the total enrollment is 12,205 students, down about 349 students from the same time in 2011, according to WIU.
There are about 1,754 new freshmen this fall, compared to 1,955 at the same time in 2011. The number of new graduate students was 605 last fall and is now 580.
The WIU student body in the Quad-Cities is 1,377 now, while it was 1,372 last year, the University states. The Macomb extension's student body swelled by 66 students between 2011 and 2012, giving it a complement of 825. Overall new transfer student enrollment also increased from 1,301 to 1,328 from 2011 to 2012.
In a news release, WIU President Jack Thomas said declines in enrollment are understandable in tough economic times, noting the school is working to keep costs from preventing potential students from considering higher education.
