Gerald Dean "Jerry" Vermost, 72, of Oquawka, Ill., formerly of Geneseo and Rock Island, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2012, at Great River Hospice, Burlington, Iowa, after a 20-year battle with cancer.

A private family funeral service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 8, in the Chapel of Vandemore Funeral Home, Geneseo. Deacon Harley Chaffee will officiate. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery, Geneseo. Memorials may be left to the University of Iowa Cancer Center.

Gerald was born Jan. 6, 1940, in Geneseo, the son of Don and Frances Wirth Vermost.

Jerry retired from Swords Veneer and Lumber Co. in Rock Island where he was the human relations/safety director. During his working career he was very active in the Teamsters as a steward, secretary, treasurer and business representative. After his retirement, Jerry relocated to Oquawka where he enjoyed his horses and the rural community.

Survivors include one son, Terry (Nancy) Vermost, Bentonville, Ark.; three daughters, Tonya Wilson, Kissimmee, Fla., Toni Morey, Kissimmee, Tracy (Chris) Freeman, Orlando, Fla.; five grandchildren; one brother, Ron (Joyce) Vermost, Aiken, S.C.; two sisters, Beverly VanVooren, Moline, Rosemary Vermost, Coal Valley; and his special friend, Karen. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents and one sister Donna Smeaton.

At 7:30 a.m., a police squad carpulled up in front of Miss Day's home and escorted her to school. A caravan of students' cars joined the procession along the way.
1988 -- 25 years ago: Barbecue cooking and riverfront antics are planned for Discover the
River Day Saturday in Leach Park, Bettendorf. A 5K run, wind surfing, a canoe race, hogcalling and more will round out the day under the Interstate 74 bridge.
